UK: Thomas Johnstone Ltd (TJL) has started working on the second phase of the Lower Gilmore Place PBSA development in Edinburgh’s Fountainbridge area.

Located along the Union Canal, was designed to offer a prime location within easy reach of the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University, and Napier University.

Fountainbridge used to be an industrial heartland of Edinburgh and has undergone significant regeneration in recent years.

The scheme was bought by Legal & General (L&G) from Glencairn Properties, for more than £35 million last month.

This phase will add 82 student beds to the existing facility, enhancing the vibrant student community along the Union Canal.

The first phase, finished in 2023, delivered a four-storey building with 69 modern studio apartments, communal gardens, and ground-floor social spaces.

Thomas Johnstone Ltd was appointed as the main contractor, and ISA Architects will overview the works.

With work now underway, the second phase is scheduled for completion ahead of the 2026 academic year.

Campbell Ross, regional construction director at Thomas Johnstone Ltd, said: “We are delighted to embark on the second phase of the Lower Gilmore Place development. Building upon the success of the first phase, we are committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable living spaces that meet the evolving needs of Edinburgh’s student population.”
