UK: Plans have been submitted for a 400+ unit coliving scheme in Cardiff’s Cathays neighbourhood.

The proposed application from developer Watkin Jones concerns land at Custom House Street and would see the construction of a coliving building of up to 33 storeys (105.6 metres) tall.

It would house up to 437 residential units with flexible ground and first floor retail, commercial, community and coliving uses. Also included would be associated access and landscaping, cycle parking within the building, and public realm works surrounding the development site.

Property consultant Lichfields, on behalf of Watkin Jones, has requested that Cardiff Council provides a formal environmental impact assessment (EIA) screening opinion for the development.

The majority of the application site is currently vacant and has been cleared of all previous buildings.

The brownfield site is the subject of full planning permission dating back to 2016 for a student accommodation scheme of 447 bed spaces within a 42-storey tower. That scheme has not been completed.

A full planning application is being prepared for the latest scheme. This will be submitted in the coming months, following the pre-application consultation process.
