Sri Lanka: Nearly 800 acres of land belonging to the country’s Urban Development Authority have been identified as cultivable under the government’s program to cultivate urban lands.

The urban development and housing minister Prasanna Ranatunga has instructed the relevant authorities to commence cultivation of these lands immediately.

The sites are located in all districts of the island and range in size from one to 400 acres. The Minister further instructed the authorities to identify the crops endemic to each area and cultivate them on the plots.

Ranatunga gave the instructions during a discussion on the future activities of the Urban Development Authority. He instructed the Urban Development Authority to suspend large scale projects that have not been started so far and to implement only projects that are currently operational.

He said it was important that the majority of the projects being launched in the country were targeted at resolving the food crisis in the future.
