Worldwide: The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) has revealed that its WELL for residential certification has reached 40,000 units in 22 countries.

The WELL for residential programme launched in early 2024. At the time, 25 global pilot participants joined the programme.

The third-party verified certification addresses health and wellbeing within all residence types, including single-family homes and units in build-to-rent buildings. It covers aspects such as indoor air and water quality, natural lighting, access to fitness and green spaces, and overall strategies promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

Now, nearly 20 million square feet of real estate are participating in the programme. More than seven million square feet are already certified or pre-certified WELL Residences, representing over 3,000 units.

IWBI president and CEO, Rachel Hodgdon, said: “This has been a global, collaborative effort to address the urgent need for homes that actively support the health and wellbeing of their residents while delivering tangible financial benefits for developers and investors alike.”

Liz Miles, vice president of residential at IWBI, added: “As the residential real estate market continues to evolve, homebuyers and renters are calling for homes that prioritise their wellbeing. Healthy, resilient homes are better positioned to respond to climate impacts and improve residents’ wellbeing, and the WELL for residential programme provides an actionable framework to design and build such communities.”

The WELL for residential programme joins IWBI’s broader offering, which includes WELL Certification, WELL Coworking Rating, the WELL Health-Safety Rating, among others.

WELL strategies have been adopted in nearly 100,000 commercial and residential locations totalling more than six billion square feet of space in more than 140 countries.
