UK: Birmingham City Council has approved Vita Group’s £245 million regeneration plan for the former Axis site on Holliday Street, paving the way for a mixed-use neighbourhood named Goods Station.

The Manchester-based developer, which specialises in purpose-built residential and student accommodation, will deliver five buildings, including 990 homes, 720 student bedrooms, a 278-room hotel or serviced apartment building, and a food hall for independent traders.

The development will also introduce a landscaped public square, connecting the city centre to Westside.

The scheme is expected to deliver significant economic benefits. During construction, it will support around 485 jobs and inject £245 million into the local economy. Once operational, it will provide 185 on-site roles, generate £2.4 million in council tax and contribute approximately £7.8 million to Birmingham’s economy annually.

Goods Station aims to unlock a brownfield site that has been vacant since 2021. It will improve pedestrian access between New Street Station and surrounding cultural and leisure destinations, including Centenary Square and Broad Street.

Jon Weston, development director at Vita Group, said: “We are delighted with today’s decision to approve our application for a highly prominent city-centre site that has been vacant since 2021.

“Over the past two years, we’ve worked closely with Birmingham City Council and engaged extensively with the local community on a scheme that will become a landmark destination for Birmingham.

“Goods Station will transform a brownfield site into a 21st-century sustainable urban neighbourhood, creating hundreds of new homes, a public food hall and an urban square for Birmingham’s residents and visitors to enjoy all year round.

“Building on our strong track record of delivering and operating high-quality schemes in the city – including Pebble Mill in Edgbaston – we look forward to bringing forward another exemplary, sustainable development for Birmingham.”
