UK: The London Borough of Southwark has approved Chords, HUB Living’s 1.2-acre mixed use scheme in Elephant and Castle.
Chords will arrive as Elephant and Castle’s first purpose-built coliving project, and HUB’s largest coliving approval to date.
Designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, three towers will deliver 695 coliving units, 20 social rent three-bedrooms, an NHS health centre, ground floor amenities, podium courtyard and children’s play area.
Environment architects Gillespies designed the landscape and public space, achieving 128 per cent biodiversity gain. HUB said its plans were shaped through local community engagement.
“Securing this consent, for just shy of 700 homes, is meaningful: it sends a clear signal of confidence in innovative, community‑focused rental living,” HUB managing director Damien Sharkey said. “Through Southwark Council’s decision, we can bring forward a significant mixed-use scheme with high‑quality co‑living homes and much‑needed affordable homes for social rent, as well as essential community infrastructure including a new NHS health centre – all within an exceptionally well‑connected, vibrant neighbourhood.”
Chords is part of the larger Elephant Park master plan. The scheme includes over 50 retail and leisure units, a food and craft market and community spaces.
