US: The University of Mississippi has selected the global real estate firm Greystar to develop new on-campus accommodation as part of a broader effort to expand and modernise student living facilities.
Under the terms of a public-private partnership approved by the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning Board last week, Greystar will develop and manage a new 1,400-bed student housing project near the university’s South Campus Recreation Centre.
Construction is set to begin in summer 2026, with delivery targeted for the 2027 academic year.
The development is part of the University of Mississippi’s long-term campus master plan and aims to meet growing demand from upperclassmen and graduate students.
The new complex will replace the ageing University Village, which is set to be demolished later this year.
Chancellor Glenn Boyce said, “This partnership with Greystar allows us to deliver modern, high-quality facilities without relying solely on state funding, while ensuring we retain control over the future of our campus.”
The agreement includes a 40-year ground lease with Greystar, which will design, finance, build, operate, and maintain the facility. Revenues will be used to support ongoing operations and reinvestment into campus housing.
The announcement comes amid a wave of institutional interest in US student housing, underscored by Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing’s recent acquisition of a 1,100-bed off-campus property serving the University of Mississippi.
The firm purchased The Retreat at Oxford, a cottage-style student housing community located roughly a mile from campus, from a subsidiary of student housing operator Landmark Properties for an undisclosed sum.
