UK: Architects Sheppard Robson has secured permission for a 491-bed purpose-built student accommodation and a 248-room Premier Inn hotel in Norwich.
The mixed-use plans also include 75 homes at a later stage of the development.
Drawn up for developer Whitbread PLC, the hybrid application was given unanimous consent by Norwich planning committee.
The existing Premier Inn, on the banks of the River Wensum, will be demolished to make way for the new hotel and two PBSA blocks.
The proposal will see an increase in building height and massing on the site, with the new hotel, dubbed Norwich Nelson, reaching seven storeys, while the student blocks will range between five and six storeys, replacing a two-storey office building.
A new public square is planned, to be framed by the student accommodation, which will open up onto an enhanced riverside path.
Dan Burr, partner at Sheppard Robson, said: “Our plans for Norwich Nelson rethink how this important gateway can serve the city, weaving together hospitality, residential, and student living accommodation with carefully designed public spaces. The masterplan aims to create an inclusive and accessible environment that connects people to the riverside and reinvigorates this part of the city.”
The approval comes shortly after Sheppard Robson submitted a separate Premier Inn demolition/replacement and student housing scheme to create 29 and 14-storey towers in Wembley Park, north-west London.
