UK: The redevelopment of Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester into a “health village” with affordable housing for nurses and an aparthotel for patients will be signed off by Manchester council’s executive this week.
A final masterplan to build a 5G-enabled smart hospital with world-class scientific research and training facilities will be given the green light.
The vision set out by Manchester Foundation Trust (MFT) and developer Bruntwood would take 10 to 15 years to realise, and would see the existing hospital rebuilt in stages.
It would sit at the centre of a campus interspersed with open green spaces which could also be served by an extension of the Metrolink.
The largely positive response to a public consultation on the hospital’s strategic draft framework (SRF) was presented to the council’s economy scrutiny committee last week.
While it is not a planning application, the document will be used by the council’s planning committee when the official proposals are put forward for consideration.
Plans to provide onsite housing for key workers and some patients were largely welcomed, though some were concerned that residential uses could affect people living nearby.
