UK: Kilburn & District Properties and development manager General Projects have submitted plans for the conversion of a 1960s building in Camden Town, north London, into a purpose built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme.
The vacant former British Transport Police building will be refurbished and extended to provide 345 student beds and 20,000 square feet of flexible commercial and community space at ground level. The scheme has been designed by AHMM.
A variety of bedroom types will include studios and cluster rooms, with amenities including study spaces, fitness facilities, communal lounges and terraces.
The waterfront site currently provides no public access to the Regent’s Canal and the proposals seek to open around 125 feet of previously inaccessible canal frontage, creating a new route from the street to the water’s edge.
Duncan Gilbert and Nicholas Gilbert, from Kilburn & District Properties, said: “Our ambition is to create a distinctive new landmark for Camden Town, one that draws inspiration from the area’s rich industrial heritage while embracing contemporary architecture and sustainable design. Creating student homes in this exciting location is an opportunity not only to give the existing building a new lease of life, but also to help rebalance Camden Town towards its north western corridor, opening up this under appreciated stretch of Regent’s Canal and creating a more welcoming, connected and vibrant place for the wider community.
“The project reflects our wider philosophy of long-term stewardship by reimagining a disused building as an active new student hub, opening up the public realm around the site and making a positive contribution to the wider community.”
