UK: MCR Property Group has acquired The Lawns and Ferens Hall in Cottingham, East Yorkshire, from Hull University, with plans to build purpose-built student accommodations (PBSA) and residential developments.
The 39-acre sites previously provided 970 bedrooms across seven accommodation blocks but were closed in 2019 as part of the University of Hull’s strategy to consolidate student housing on the main campus.
The company has now announced plans to refurbish the buildings and reopen them in time for the next academic year, restoring them as vibrant centres for student living.
In parallel, MCR is working with the local council to develop a residential scheme that includes approximately 90 new homes at Ferens Hall, with additional opportunities under review across The Lawns site.
Nick Lake, fund director at MCR Property Group, said: “The Lawns and Ferens Hall are iconic sites with a proud history. Our vision is to restore them to their former role as centres for student living, while also introducing a high-quality residential scheme that will meet local housing needs. By working in partnership with the council, we aim to create a sustainable development that brings lasting benefit to the community and supports Hull’s growth as a university city.”
MCR said this acquisition strengthens its ongoing strategy to scale its PBSA platform nationwide while delivering developments that combine operational excellence with community impact.
