UK: Architect GRID has revealed plans to convert a former community venue in Peckham, south London, with a coliving scheme and a replacement cultural space.
The practice is working with developer Cherwell Group on proposals to redevelop the site of community venue SET Social at 55 Nigel Road, off Rye Lane.
The coliving scheme would replace the existing collection of low-rise buildings with self-contained studios featuring shared kitchens, lounges, workspaces, fitness facilities and roof terraces. Consultation material says the accommodation is aimed at people working locally, key workers, graduates and others seeking flexible housing in well-connected urban locations.
A permanent home for SET Social or a similar community organisation, coworking space, landscaped public realm and a new pedestrian route linking Nigel Road with Sternhall Lane is also proposed as part of the mixed-use plans.
SET Social has occupied the site since 2021, hosting exhibitions, performances, workshops and community events.
According to the project team, the existing buildings are in poor condition and require substantial investment, while much of the site consists of hardstanding and temporary structures.
GRID’s proposals have been informed by the site’s history as the former location of the Peckham Rye Tabernacle, a Victorian church that was badly damaged during the Second World War before being demolished.
The practice has designed a red-brick development with curved frontages intended to reflect the rhythm and proportions of neighbouring buildings while stepping down towards surrounding residential streets.
Cherwell Group is carrying out a public consultation ahead of submitting a planning application to Southwark Council later this year.
