UK: Nova Co-Living has submitted plans to convert two vacant buildings in Sunderland city centre into a £5 million co-living development with 63 private studios.
The proposed scheme, known as The Arngrove, would restore Arngrove House and the adjoining Victorian terrace at 3–6 Frederick Street in the Sunniside Conservation Area.
The development would accommodate up to 86 residents. Each studio would include a private bathroom and kitchenette.
More than 400 square metres of shared amenity space is planned, including a communal kitchen and dining area, residents’ lounge, co-working space, fitness suite, games room, private dining room and rooftop terrace.
Nova said the scheme would target young professionals, graduates, key workers and contract workers seeking flexible city-centre accommodation.
The largely car-free development would include one staff parking space and a short-term space for deliveries and drop-offs. It would also have a staffed reception and daily on-site management.
Ari Aftergut, founder of Nova Co-Living, said: “This is a major private investment in the city centre, bringing long-underused buildings back into active use and creating a new kind of professionally managed city living.”
London architecture practice Tigg + Coll designed the scheme, with interiors referencing Sunderland’s shipbuilding, glassmaking and rope-making history.
Subject to approval from Sunderland City Council, The Arngrove would become Nova’s flagship development. The company is also progressing co-living schemes on Newcastle Road in Sunderland and Albemarle Street in South Shields.
