Italian university buys hotel for student accommodation conversion

University

Italy: The University of Messina (UniME) in Sicily is the new owner of the Hotel Riviera in the city.

The hotel was bought by the Italian state for more than €12 million, which has been secured through public funding, 65 per cent of it from Italy’s share of the European Union’s €672.5 billion post-COVID recovery fund.

The deal for the purchase of the hotel had been signed by the city back in October 2021.

Hotel Riviera is not the first hotel that the University of Messina is using for student housing. In February this year, Rector Cuzzocrea revealed that the University would rent another asset, Hotel Liberty, for the next 15 years.

The hotels will be able to offer accommodation to a total of 408 students between them.
