UK: Developer Hammerson has secured outline planning consent from Bristol City Council for a 600-bed purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme.
The approval enables Hammerson to convert underutilised land next to a council car park at Cabot Gate, building student accommodation, public realm and community uses, subject to detailed design and reserved matters approval.
Following public consultation, community engagement, and close alignment with Bristol City Council’s vision for the city, the approved outline plans include a multi-purpose community pavilion, new green spaces, and improved pedestrian and cycle routes linking local areas with the city centre.
“Securing outline planning consent for Cabot Gate is a significant milestone for this important city centre site,” said Jonatan Carlring, development director at Hammerson. “We have worked closely with Bristol City Council and the local community to bring forward proposals that improve connectivity, create high-quality public spaces and deliver much‑needed accommodation, while enhancing the arrival experience into Bristol. We look forward to exploring next steps for this exciting scheme.”
The consent builds on Hammerson’s wider programme of investment in Bristol, including approved plans to enhance the Quakers Friars shopping centre. Hammerson has also been leading the ongoing repositioning at Cabot Circus, with new retail and leisure openings.
